Agrowtek Agrowtek SXW Weather Station Modbus RTU template

Agrowtek SXW Weather Station

Outdoor weather station for temperature, humidity, irradiance, wind, rain and CO2.

The Agrowtek SXW is an aspirated outdoor weather station that measures temperature, humidity and irradiance next to a greenhouse or growing facility, with optional wind, rain and CO2 sensors. This Modbus RTU template reads all weather values and identification through the LX2 ModLINK, and lets you write calibration offsets and the units toggle from ModbusCloud.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show outside temperature, humidity, irradiance and wind next to the greenhouse climate on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email or webhook when wind speed passes your limit, so someone checks vents and screens.
  • Alert on rain with a rule on the rain value and see every rain event in the 365-day history.
  • Compare daily irradiance across seasons to plan shading and supplementary lighting.
  • Run an automation that sends a webhook or writes a register when the outside temperature drops below a threshold.

Installation

  1. Mount the SXW outside with free airflow, with the optional wind and rain sensors on the pole kit. Run a CAT5 or CAT6 cable from its GrowNET port to an Agrowtek LX2 ModLINK indoors.

  2. Wire TX/RX+ and TX/RX- of the LX2 to the RS485 terminals of the ModbusCloud Gateway and terminate the bus at both ends. Supply 24 Vdc for the station.

  3. Give the station its own address from 1 to 247 with the AgrowLINK utility, or write it to the address register at broadcast address 254 while it is the only device on the bus.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with protocol RTU, the station address, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template.

  5. Check that temperature, humidity and irradiance look plausible. Remove the wind, rain or CO2 registers if those sensors are not fitted.

Things to watch for

The weather station does not answer through the LX2. What should I check?

Check 19200 baud, no parity, 1 stop bit and the station address in ModbusCloud; the LX2 may have been set to another speed with the ModLINK utility. Swap TX/RX+ and TX/RX- if nothing comes back, terminate the RS485 bus, and give every GrowNET device behind the LX2 its own address.

Wind speed looks wrong for km/h. Which unit is it?

The SXW reports wind speed in miles per hour, 0 to 125 mph. Multiply by 1.609 for km/h. Wind direction is in degrees from 0 to 359.

Why does barometric pressure show no useful value?

Agrowtek lists the pressure registers but marks pressure as not currently available. Remove them from the Modbus device so they do not clutter your dashboards.

Can I calibrate the station from ModbusCloud?

Yes. Write the correct value to the offset register of a sensor in the scale of the reading, for example 25.00 °C for temperature. The analog output calibration shifts a 4-20 mA output by 0.005 mA per step. Writing is off per gateway by default; request it for the gateway in the portal.

Can I plug the GrowNET cable into the network port of the Gateway?

No. GrowNET uses RJ45 plugs but it is not Ethernet. Connect the station to the LX2 ModLINK and wire the LX2 to the RS485 terminals of the ModbusCloud Gateway.
