Carlo Gavazzi Carlo Gavazzi WM15 Modbus RTU template

Carlo Gavazzi WM15

Panel power analyser that measures power, energy, demand and harmonic distortion on three-phase systems.

The Carlo Gavazzi WM15 is a 96 x 96 mm panel power analyser that measures power, energy and harmonic distortion on three-phase systems with current transformers. This Modbus RTU template reads voltages, currents, power, power factor, energy, demand and THD values and lets you set the CT ratio, alarm and pulse output from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show voltage, current and power per phase of a distribution board on a dashboard and see at once which phase carries the most load.
  • Get an email when total current harmonic distortion stays above a threshold you choose, for example after new drives were installed.
  • Keep a history of imported and exported energy per month for a tenant, a production line or a PV installation.
  • Follow the demand maximum per phase to check whether a connection is close to its contracted capacity.
  • Reset the partial energy counter or change the demand integration time remotely without opening the panel.

Installation

  1. Connect the RS485 terminals of the WM15 to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway (A, B and common) and terminate the last device on the line.

  2. On the WM15 set the Modbus address, baud rate and parity, or keep the defaults: address 1, 9600 baud, no parity.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device (RTU) with the same address and serial settings and import this template.

  4. Check that the values arrive: Voltage L1-N should show the mains voltage and Frequency about 50 Hz. Check the CT ratio if currents look wrong.

Things to watch for

The WM15 does not answer. What should I check?

Check that your WM15 has the RS485 port (OS or OSPF variant); the OX variants have none. Then match address, baud rate and parity with the meter, default 1, 9600 baud, no parity. Swap A and B if nothing answers, and check the termination at both ends of the line.

Currents and powers are a factor off.

The WM15 multiplies by the CT ratio set in the meter. If the ratio does not match the current transformers, all currents, powers and energies are off by the same factor. Set the right ratio, for example 40.0 for a 200/5 A transformer. On MID variants only the front panel can change it.

Power is negative on one phase.

A negative active power or power factor means the meter sees export on that phase. On a load without generation this usually means a current transformer is fitted the wrong way round or swapped with another phase. Check the wiring, or invert the current direction of that input on non-MID variants.

Can I change settings and reset counters from ModbusCloud?

Yes, the settings and reset registers are writable once writing registers is switched on for your gateway. Reset Total Energy clears the totals and cannot be undone, so use it only when you mean to. Changing the RS485 settings breaks communication until you change them in ModbusCloud too.
