Use cases

Installation

Fit the M C 485 232 communication module on the WM20 and wire RS485 A and B to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, with termination at both ends of the bus.
On the keypad, set the Modbus address, baud rate and parity of the communication module and note them.
In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address and serial settings and import this template.
Check that the voltages and frequency come in with plausible values, for example around 230 V and 50 Hz.

Things to watch for

The WM20 does not answer on the RS485 bus. What should I check?

Check that a M C 485 232 module is fitted and enabled, and that address, baud rate and parity on the display match the device in ModbusCloud. Then swap A and B and check the termination at the last device. Without a communication module the base unit only has the optical port.

Why do the power values look far too small or too large?

Check the CT and VT ratio in the WM20. With current transformers the ratio must match the transformer, for example 100 for 500/5 A. Also check that the wiring system matches the installation, for example 3PN for three phases with neutral.

I changed the address or baud rate over Modbus and nothing happened.

Serial and optical settings only take effect after you write 1 to the matching apply command or switch the WM20 off and on. Wait at least six seconds, then talk to the meter on its new settings. Ethernet settings take effect after Update Ethernet is set to 1.

What should I keep in mind when I write registers?

Writing changes the meter itself: a wrong CT ratio changes every value, a counter reset clears the energy history in the meter, and a wrong address or speed cuts off communication. Read the current value first, note it, and write one setting at a time.
