Onokom ONOKOM AIR GR-1-MB-B Modbus RTU template

ONOKOM AIR GR-1-MB-B

Controls Gree air conditioners via the ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B Modbus gateway.

This template connects Gree air conditioners to the ModbusCloud platform via the ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B gateway over Modbus RTU at 9600 baud. It provides indoor and outdoor temperature readings, connection status, and full control over operating modes, fan speed, vane positions, and target temperature.

Use cases

  • Monitor indoor and outdoor air temperatures of Gree AC units on a live cloud dashboard.
  • Set target temperature and operating mode remotely without accessing the indoor unit or remote control.
  • Create alerts when the AC connection status indicates the unit has gone offline unexpectedly.
  • Track energy-saving mode usage such as Eco, Sleep, and Quiet across multiple customer sites.
  • Control vertical and horizontal vane swing to adjust airflow direction from the ModbusCloud platform.
  • Log temperature and mode data over time to verify HVAC performance during commissioning.

Installation

  1. Connect the ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B gateway to the Gree indoor unit following the gateway manufacturer's wiring instructions.

  2. Wire the RS-485 A and B terminals of the ONOKOM gateway to the corresponding RS-485 port on the ModbusCloud Gateway.

  3. Set the Modbus slave address on the ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B gateway and ensure the baud rate is configured to 9600, 8N1.

  4. Import the ONOKOM AIR GR-1-MB-B template in the ModbusCloud platform and assign the correct slave address.

  5. Verify communication by checking that indoor air temperature and AC connection status appear with valid values on the dashboard.

  6. Test write operations by adjusting the target temperature or switching operating modes from the ModbusCloud interface.

Things to watch for

Why do some registers seem to return unexpected values?

Several register addresses on the ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B are shared between different functions. For example, address 4 is used for both outdoor air temperature and quiet mode status. The template uses distinct function codes for read and write operations to differentiate. Ensure you are using the correct function code when querying manually.

What baud rate and serial settings should I use?

The ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B communicates at 9600 baud with 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit (8N1). Make sure the ModbusCloud gateway serial port matches these settings exactly.

The AC connection status shows disconnected. What should I check?

Verify the physical wiring between the ONOKOM gateway and the Gree indoor unit. Check that the gateway has power and that the correct connector on the indoor unit PCB is used. Consult the ONOKOM installation manual for pin assignments.

Can I use this template with non-Gree air conditioners?

No. The ONOKOM GR-1-MB-B gateway is designed specifically for Gree air conditioning systems. Other brands require a different gateway or template.
