E+E Elektronik E+E Elektronik EE872 - Modular 4 in 1 probe for CO2, humidity, temperature and pressure Modbus RTU template

E+E Elektronik EE872 - Modular 4 in 1 probe for CO2, humidity, temperature and pressure

Measures CO2, humidity, temperature, and pressure for agriculture and outdoor use.

The E+E Elektronik EE872 is a modular 4-in-1 Modbus RTU probe that measures CO2 concentration (up to 50,000 ppm), relative humidity, temperature, dew point, and pressure. This template reads all five parameters from float32 registers for live monitoring on the ModbusCloud platform.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor CO2 concentration in a livestock barn and trigger alerts when levels exceed a safe threshold.
  • Track temperature and relative humidity trends in a greenhouse over days or weeks on a live dashboard.
  • Create an alert when CO2 drops below a target setpoint in an incubator or hatcher environment.
  • Log barometric pressure alongside CO2 data to correlate weather patterns with ventilation performance.
  • Share a read-only dashboard with a farm operator showing real-time dew point and humidity values.
  • Compare historical CO2 and temperature data across multiple EE872 probes installed in different zones.

Installation

  1. Connect the EE872 probe to the ModbusCloud Gateway using a shielded twisted-pair cable for the RS-485 A and B lines, plus a ground connection.

  2. Set the EE872 Modbus slave address to a unique value on the bus and confirm the baud rate is 9600 with odd parity (8E1).

  3. Power the EE872 according to its datasheet specifications and verify the RS-485 bus termination resistor is placed correctly if the probe is at the end of the bus.

  4. Import the E+E Elektronik EE872 template in the ModbusCloud portal and assign it to the correct gateway and slave address.

  5. Verify that live readings for temperature, relative humidity, CO2, dew point, and pressure appear on the dashboard after the first polling cycle.

Things to watch for

I see incorrect or very large values for temperature or CO2. What is wrong?

All registers on the EE872 are float32, meaning each value spans two consecutive 16-bit registers. Verify that the gateway is configured to read 32-bit floats and that the byte order (word swap) matches the probe. The ModbusCloud template handles this automatically, but manual overrides can cause misreads.

The gateway cannot communicate with the EE872 at all. What should I check?

Confirm the baud rate is set to 9600 and parity is odd (8E1) on both the probe and the gateway. Also verify that the A and B wires are not swapped and the correct slave address is configured in the template.

Can I write setpoints or control outputs on the EE872 through ModbusCloud?

No. The EE872 only exposes read-only measurement registers over Modbus. There are no writable control registers available.

Does the template support multiple EE872 probes on the same RS-485 bus?

Yes. Assign a unique Modbus slave address to each probe and add a separate template instance for each address in ModbusCloud. Ensure proper bus wiring and termination when daisy-chaining multiple devices.
