ModbusCloud deletes readings, resolved alerts and logs automatically after a fixed period for each type. You cannot change these periods yourself. If you want to keep data for longer, export it before the period runs out.
Retention period per type of data
The table shows how long ModbusCloud keeps each type of data and where you find it in the portal.
| Data | Where you see it | Retention period |
|---|---|---|
| Readings, at most one per register per minute | Trends, Download readings and the REST API | 365 days |
| Alerts that are not resolved yet | Alerts and the REST API | Until they are resolved |
| Resolved alerts, with their notes | Resolved tab under Alerts and the REST API | 365 days after resolving |
| Gateway log | History tab on the gateway page | 1825 days (5 years) |
| Notifications | The bell in the top bar | 90 days |
| Report deliveries | The list of latest deliveries under Reports | 365 days |
| kWh per day per tariff | Tariff tab on the gateway page | No fixed period |
| Settings, such as Modbus devices, registers, alert rules, dashboards and reports | Where you set them up | Until you delete them |
| Log of sent email | Not in the portal | 365 days |
| Log of sent webhooks | Not in the portal | 30 days |
ModbusCloud cleans up most data every Sunday at 03:00. Data can therefore stay up to a week longer than the period.
ModbusCloud calculates the daily totals per tariff every night from the readings. They remain when those readings disappear after 365 days.
Export your data
You can get readings, configuration and alerts out of the portal in four ways. The table shows what each route gives you and who can use it.
| Route | What you get | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Download readings in the three-dot menu on the gateway page | CSV with all registers of one gateway, up to 500 000 readings per file | Every role |
| CSV on the Trends tab | CSV with the registers and the period of the chart, at most 30 days | Every role |
| Export configuration in the same menu | JSON with the Modbus devices, registers and alert rules of the gateway | Owner, admin and technician |
| REST API | Gateways, registers, history and alerts in JSON | Software with an API key, which an owner or admin creates |
Because readings are kept for 365 days, Everything under Download readings also goes back about a year. What the file contains and what to do above 500 000 readings is described in Download readings.
A CSV export of alerts does not exist. You retrieve alerts and large amounts of history as described in REST API and webhooks.
After your licence ends
If your licence ends, you have 90 more days to export your data. After that, ModbusCloud deletes your personal data and the data of your gateways within 30 days. The backups that still contain them expire within 35 days after that. Invoice data is kept for 7 years, because the tax retention obligation requires it.
Article 9 of the terms and conditions sets out these periods. For personal data that ModbusCloud processes on your behalf, the data processing agreement also applies. Under that agreement, you tell ModbusCloud in writing within 30 days after the end whether it returns or erases the data.
How to cancel is described in Cancel your licence and have your account deleted.
You remain the owner of your data
You remain the owner of the readings, the data of your gateways and the data of your customers. This is stated in article 8 of the terms.
Under the European Data Act, you have the right to an export of the data that your gateways and Modbus devices produce. You receive that export in a common format that software can read. If you need an export that the portal does not create itself, request it through the support page.
